Deian Hopkin marked his retirement from London South Bank University with a shuffle and a bop, playing his way out on the piano.

Deian Hopkin marked his retirement from London South Bank University with a shuffle and a bop, playing his way out on the piano.

Accompanied by leading jazz musicians, and LSBU staff, the vice-chancellor played an impromptu gig at the university's students' union.

With Tony Reeves on bass guitar and Kylie Minogue's drummer Gary O'Toole, Professor Hopkin tinkled the ivories through some classic jazz numbers. Australian vocalist Simone Craddock joined the group to sing Billie Holiday standards God Bless the Child and All of Me.

LSBU staff supported Deian, and his professionals, with Adrian Moody, Purchasing Manager, on saxaphone and Simon Ford, Estates, doing an excellent keyboard session.

Professor Hopkin has been succeeded at London South Bank by Martin Earwicker, formerly director of the National Museum of Science and Industry family of museums.

Dar fails to capture EU market share

Despite a potential market for coffee and tea in the United Kingdoms as well as in whole of the European Union, Tanzania is not fully exploiting it as neighboring Kenya is doing.

The roasting and blending companies are highly strong in the EU, which makes it hard, principally for small-scale producers, to enter the coffee market,`` researchers said in a study presented at a workshop on EU and UK held in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday. The researchers are Dr Herbert Robinson and Hildebrand Shayo of the London South Bank University Commission.
